We have some news to share: we wrote a book!
Outdoor Light-Painting Photography: The Essential Field Guide is out today in North America. After more than a decade of creating images together with handheld light, movement, and long exposures, we've gathered our approach into 176 pages.
Many of you have been part of this through our tutorials, workshops, and your own experiments with light-painting tubes. This book brings the techniques we share into one place, whether you're trying your first light painting or looking for something new to explore on your next night out.

What's inside
We start with the foundations: camera settings, equipment, and how a flashlight and a plastic tube become tools for making photographs. From there, we get into the things that shape an outdoor session: timing, location, composition, movement, and how light behaves in the scene.
The guide covers:
- Camera setup, equipment, and the basics of light painting
- Creating light shapes and composing with a person and a landscape
- Working on beaches, in forests and cityscapes, and under star trails and auroras
- Post-processing walkthroughs and practical reference tables for the field
You can work through it as an introduction or come back to a specific technique before heading outside. The photographs sit alongside the explanations, so you can see how the ideas come together.
